My family owned and operated a commercial printing business in Fort Collins.  I don’t remember it ever being expected, but it happened that my two older brothers and my younger sister all worked there everyday after school and throughout our summer vacations.  At the age of 12, my job was sales and customer service to any customers I could reach on my Schwinn Super Sport 10-speed bike.  I regularly picked up and delivered printing orders to 150 customers.

After graduating from Fort Collins High School, I worked for my parents full-time.  It turned out to be the best education for me.  My mom and dad would often share advice and offer their wisdom, hoping that I would take an easier path and avoid mistakes that they had made in their lives.  I remember like it was yesterday, some twenty-five years ago, when my Dad came to work one day with a newspaper article he had clipped from one of the first issues of USA Today.  The article was titled “Best Way to the Top….Work Hard….Think Smart”.

I taped that article to the inside of my briefcase and was reminded of its simple wisdom every day for many years.  It has, in a way, become my family’s coat-of-arms.  My kids are no strangers to these words as I remind them everyday before school or before taking on a new challenge.  To this day, I apply these principles to everything I encounter. 

Fort Collins was a great place to grow up and is still a wonderful place to raise a family and make a living.  The approach to my campaign, and my promise to you if you allow me to be your Senator, will be to continue practicing the simple principle that has done me well in life: Work Hard and Think Smart.  With that, together we will Do Better!
